Frequently Asked Questions

How Deep is Smith Mountain Lake?
In our experience SML averages between 40 and 200 ft deep. There are a few shoals and shallow areas but for the most part they are plainly marked and often lighted. One tip is to observe the shoreline. If the surrounding shoreline is level or slightly sloped you can assume the water is shallow. As long as you stay in the channel and keep your eyes open you should not have a bit of trouble. When the lake is close to full pond (795ft) you can go almost anywhere. If in doubt, purchase a lake map at anyone of the area marinas.

Where is a good place to rent a boat in SML ?
Over the past four years we've tried many of the local boat rentals. By far the best experience we've had was at Parrot Cove marina. Each time we rented there we received great service and a clean and well maintained watercraft that did not let us down. Take a look at their website at www.parrotcove.com

When is a good time to make reservations ?
Simply put, the early bird get the worm. Summertime Holiday weeks ( Memorial day, July 4th, Labor day etc) are generally taken in mid January with the majority of summer reservations made during March, April and May. Sometimes we have a cancellation and a summer week opens up so don't be afraid to call and ask.
During the spring and fall we also rent on a daily basis and many people come down for a long weekend. During this period it's not nearly as hectic and to be truthful we like it better than in the summer.
